The Legacy of IHACHI Tea Farm

In an era when tea was highly esteemed, IHACHI was one of Japan’s renowned tea farms. For over 120 years, the farm has been dedicated to preserving the passion and tradition of tea cultivation. IHACHI has been committed to organic farming for 30 years. Despite facing opposition, Seiji made the pivotal decision to transition his land to organic methods. His commitment to providing safe and healthy teas was a testament to his dedication and belief in organic farming. At the age of 36, Takuya Shigeta took over from his father Seiji, continuing the family’s legacy despite the challenges faced by many tea farms. Takuya’s pride in his Shizuoka heritage drives him to share their exceptional teas with the US market.

Takuya’s Philosophy on Tea Production

Takuya Shigeta believes, “It is okay not to produce a large quantity of tea. I prioritize quality over quantity.” Organic farming presents its own set of challenges—persistent weeds, bees, and mosquitoes. However, nature’s balance plays a crucial role on their farm. Ducks, mantises, and other natural allies assist in maintaining this balance. Takuya and his father are grateful for this harmony and are dedicated to working together to produce safe and healthy teas for everyone.

Innovative Organic Fertilizer

They developed their own organic fertilizer, “Bokashi,” using a method similar to making soup stock. This unique process imparts a distinctive and flavorful taste to their teas.
